COMPETITION FOR THE REALISATION OF A STORAGE HALL AND WORKSHOPS FOR TANKS

Büre (JU) 2001

Competition for a storage hall and two workshops for tanks in Büre/JU, 50,000 m3.

angledroit Architectes, 2002, in collaboration with the group Cêtre & Nussbaumer, civil engineers.

The aim of this project was to create a centre for the maintenance and storage of tanks. In this manner, the new construction is foremostly based on the pre-existing structures. Immediately, our interest was manifested towards the project of a very large building, with a single tenant.

The length and disposition of the construction materialise a central exterior space. The building itself, split at the centre, bears a covered area of encounter. The latter coincides with the articulation of the two functions - workshop / storage - specified in the requirements of the project.

The dimensions of the hall in respect to the workshops result in two different lengths. The conjugation of the eaves’ dimensions and the two functional bodies of the new structure suggest a unification through the roof. We could therefore name this project «two buildings under one roof.»

This project not only gives two-party acces to vehicles and persons, but also allows one to work in the workshops on the south end, while keeping the northern doors shut and therefore sheltered from dust displaced by traffic circulation.

The two workshops, disposed side by side, in linear fashion, authorise the implementation of a single rolling bridge.  Hence, the stretching in length reinforces the centrality of the exterior space allocated for tanks, and in respect to the existing buildings. The storage area for tanks emits a paunchy and indicative image of its function and content.

This project was eliminated in the second round. The potential cost of execution, due to the doubling of the revolving doors destined to make the building easily accessible, like a volume slightly superior to the demand, decreased the functionality of the project as a whole.
